The next person that caught my attention and kept it for a little while was a guy I met on my first day of high school. I decided to go to summer school to get my feet wet before high school started. I thought this was a good idea since I was going to a school outside of my neighborhood.

I chose Miami Jackson High as my high school for a couple of reasons, one of them being a young man I will write about later.

But on my first day as a high school student, I ran into this other guy. He was tall and slim and goofy. He and his friends were hanging outside the gym and when I walked by he said, “She’s a freshman!”

I had no friends at this new school so I went into my gym class and straight to the locker rooms to put on my PE uniform. I had a brand new lock for my locker that my parents bought me and I spent a week practicing how to unlock the combination so that I would be a pro by the time school started.

After I got dressed I went and sat in the bleachers by myself. The teacher started talking and I was lost in my thoughts, wondering what high school was going to be like. Then the guy from outside the gym came over and sat next to me. He said something funny and it made me laugh. I relaxed a little bit.

Everyday after that he came to sit next to me and make me laugh. I began to look forward to his visits and then one day, he asked if he could walk me to my school bus and I said yes. He carried my books as he smiled down at me and walked with me. This became a regular habit, us sitting together, me laughing and him walking me to my bus.

One day as I stood outside my bus, the driver was looking at us waiting for me to hop on. He gave me my books back and leaned down, and he kissed me. His lips were soft and cool. I smiled and blushed and hopped on my bus.

When time for the regular school year came around, I hadn’t seen him in a couple of weeks because I wasn’t allowed to talk to boys on the phone or date. When school started I looked for him and I finally saw him. We didn’t talk as much as we did during the summer and then he just disappeared. I found out later that he transferred to another school. He didn’t even say goodbye.

We reconnected on Facebook a couple of years ago and he told me that he always liked me a lot and he was sorry he didn’t say goodbye.

I’m rooting for him. He’s out in LA trying to make his way as a comedian. If you see him, tell him that I said Hello.
